Medallion of an enlarged impression of a jasper seal showing a standing figure of roaring lion bearing a Hebrew inscription: ‘Ishm’ ‘bdyrbm’, meaning "Belonging to Shema, servant of Jeroboam", that is Jeroboam II, King of Israel. "He (Jeroboam) restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel..." II Kings 14:25. The seal was found in the 1904 excavations at Megiddo, but was lost subsequently. The only trace of it, one of the most splendid of Hebrew seals, is a bronze cast made before it was sent on its fateful journey to Istanbul. |
