Description |
With the support of the military, he came to power after the death of the emperor Nerva. His reign was marked by aggressive expansion (he ruled the greatest extent of the Roman Empire), an extensive building program, and compassionate treatment of the poor. Full name Lucius Septimius Severus; born in Roman North Africa. He restored order to the empire after a turbulent period and consolidated the eastern frontier. He died at York while planning a major campaign into Scotland. Severus was born in the city of Leptis Magna (in modern Libya). Rising to become Roman emperor from AD 193 to 211, he reformed imperial government in North Africa, increased agricultural production and annexed large areas of interior Tripolitania (northwestern Libya). The wealth of the area came largely from the production of wheat and olive oil, some of which was exported to supply the larger cities of the empire such as Rome. |
