Description |
Octavian was the grand-nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar and took the honorary title Augustus, meaning "the exalted" when he became sole ruler of Rome after defeating Mark Antony. He became the first Roman Emperor in 27 BC and his reign is characterized by the empire's peace and prosperity. Note: as recorded in The Bible, he decreed "that all the world should be taxed" when Jesus was born (Luke 2:1). Ruled 27 BC-AD 14 |
