Description |
This bronze relief shows Greek athletes in a race. The Greeks held the human body in high esteem and celebrated its beauty in works of art as well as athletic performance. When a gymnasium came to Jerusalem, it offended many conservatively religious Jews both because games were held in honour of foreign deities and because the athletes competed naked. |
