"Gold of Ophir, for Beth-Horon, 30 shekels." This transaction, recorded on clay mentions the fabled source of gold visited by Solomon's trading ships in 1 Kings 9:28: "And they went to Ophir and brought from there gold, 420 talents, and they brought it to King Solomon." The location of Ophir was probably in southern Arabia. For everyday writing in antiquity potsherds (Greek, ostraca) rather than costly papyrus, were inscribed in ink or engraved with a stylus. |
