Description |
One of the many stamped tiles found in the Roman baths. The tiles were used, with the stamped side placed face down, for paving one of the rooms of the bath. The stamp LEGXFRE is an abbreviation of the full name of the legion: Legio Decima Fretensis. This is the Roman legion which was stationed in Jerusalem from 70 AD, the year of the destruction of the city by Titus, to the reign of Diocletian. The baths at Ramat Rahel may have served the officers of this legion. Tiles and pipes bearing the stamp of the Tenth Legion have been found elsewhere in Jerusalem and its vicinity. Publication: Y. Aharoni, Excavations at Ramat Rahel, Seasons 1959 and 1960, Rome, 1962. |
