Description |
Philosopher, scientist and Physician. Aristotle himself studied under the philosopher, Plato in Athens, though his empiricist philosophy and studies departed significantly from Platonism. In 342 BC, at the age of 42, Aristotle, the famed thinker, was summoned to the kingdom of Macedon to serve as tutor to the son of Philip II. The meeting was one of the most fruitful in history, for the prince, then 14, was to succeed to the throne six years later. He became known as Alexander the Great. The young warrior acquired a great respect for the philosopher and his persuasive ideas. In his meteoric career of conquest, Alexander established a Greek-speaking empire extending from Spain to India. He also directly sought to bring about the development and refinement of Greek knowledge, which was to be preserved in the city named after him. |
