Description |
Tara (whose name means "star" or "she who ferries across"). "The Saviouress" - a female bodhisattva with 21 different manifestations or aspects. She was born from a tear of compassion that fell from Avalokiteshvara's eyes and is thus considered the female version of Avolokiteshvara and a protector of the Tibetan people. She represents compassion in action, since she's in the process of stepping from her lotus throne in order to help sentient beings, symbolizes purity and fertility and is believed to be able to fulfil wishes. Images usually represent Green Tara, who is associated with night, or White Tara, who is associated with day. |
