Description |
In the interest of fair trading, before th introduction of coins, vendors weighed the metal used as curencty (e.g. silver) against standard stone weights. The dome-shaped limestone weights were discovered on the hill of Ophel in Jerusalem. They are marked with a sign standing for the royal shekel with a number value. The mark ensured that the weight corresponded to the standard shekel. |
