Description |
From ninth and tenth centuries AD, the Frankish state (forerunner of modern Germany and the kingdom of France, along with the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic kingdoms of the British Isles), suffered at the hands of Viking raiders from Scandinavia. King Alfred the Great (AD 871-99) managed to retain independence in Wessex, one of the former Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England, and his successors in the 10th century AD went on to establish a unified kingdom in England. |
