Description |
Between 1525 and 1535, William Tyndale produced an English Bible, having translated the entire New Testament from Greek and half of the Old Testament. His Bibles were pocket sized and smuggled into England for Protestant believers. England was still Catholic at this time of the burgeoning Protestant Reformation, and so officially only recognized the Latin Vulgate. English translations like Tyndale's were banned, and if discovered, were seized and destroyed. William Tyndale was declared a heretic for his actions and was strangled and burned outside Brussels in 1536. Once England became a Protestant nation, Tyndale's work was celebrated and his translation provided the basis of the 1611 King James Bible. |
